Packaging Paper and Paperboard in China: Current Status and Future Outlook

The production and consumption of packaging paper and paperboard in China reached 68.4 and 69.1 mmt respectively in 2017. Both sale volumes and values are reached historical highs. In 2018, new policies on solid waste importation, the trade war with USA and the ever high, stable commercial pulp price ,changes in domestic supply and consumption for packaging paper and board, will bring huge impact on the paper industry in the near future. 2018 is most likely to be a turning point in paper board production. How to deal with the difficulties of upgraded demanding market and tighter fiber supply? This is a key question for all involved in the industry.

Global Recovered Paper Market Outlook: Global Recovered Paper Trading Flow Analysis

The world market for Recovered Fibers was thrown into turmoil last year when China Government banned the import of all mixed residential papers, and set the acceptable standard for prohibitives at 0.5% for all other grades of Recovered Paper that they would allow to continue to be imported. These two changes in China’s import policy suddenly and completely changed the worldwide export markets.  Other countries throughout Asia were flooded with Recovered Paper that had been shipped to China and pricing for Recovered Paper commodities, especially mixed residential papers, plummeted.  Almost one year later worldwide markets have begun to stabilize as RP that had gone to China found new homes, or was removed from the market.  Recently however, other countries have set their own import restriction and quality standards that have added new chaos to the RP markets.

China Domestic Recovered Paper Market Outlook

China restricted imports of recovered paper in both quality and quantity in 2018. In the first three quarters, China RCP import volume dropped 47%. Meanwhile some restrictions were imposed on US RCP from May, causing a boom in Chinese paper mills’ demand for domestic and other overseas RCP grades with fiber costs increasing significantly. As the RCP import ban might be in full effect by 2020, Chinese papermaking enterprises are seeking to develop overseas projects especially in recycled pulp area to solve the raw material supply issue.

Novel Corrugate In Machine Direction By Novel Paper Technology

The base technology PAPERMORPHOSIS™  was originally created for imparting tailor-made stretch both in machine direction as in cross direction to fibrous webs. By changing 1 parameter of a unit, a novel corrugate in machine direction was generated out of standard papers without the need of stretch in such base papers. The ingoing web width of the novel longitudinal corrugate is not shrinking by the treatment. The waves are stable, the resulting corrugate can be rolled up or can be directly combined to liners or traditional corrugate. The process can be carried out either in-line at the paper producer or off-line at the converter.
